The workshop

Working steel by hand.

Galpón · La Bruja is an open workshop led by Victor R. R. Mendes, where every piece — bathtub, furniture or object — is drawn, cut and oxidised one at a time.

Who makes it

Victor R. R. Mendes runs Galpón as a maker: the line in the sketchbook is his, so is the cut of the sheet and the decision about when the oxidation has reached the right point. There is no production line — there is a bench, a span of time and a sequence of choices.

The workshop works with its doors open. Whoever orders follows the process: they see the sketch before the steel, choose the finish knowing what each one does with light, and receive a piece that will not repeat.

Based in the Serra Gaúcha, Galpón La Bruja pushes back against the mass production of contemporary furniture. Every piece carries the time its making required, connecting traditional metalwork and woodworking techniques to a design of clean, functional lines.

“What we are after is not just scale, or the absence of hurry, but the truth of the material and the time that making takes.” Victor Mendes, founder and creative director

The idea

The central idea at Galpón is simple and stubborn: do not hide the process. The seams stay in plain sight, the marks of oxidation are guided rather than disguised, and the catalogue photographs are published without retouching.

It is the opposite of the industrial object, which has to look as though no one ever touched it. Here, the piece carries the hand that made it — and that is what makes it singular.

What stays in the steel
The surface is not a finish. It is landscape.

Every piece leaves the workshop with a drawing nobody planned: the patches of oxidation, the trace of fire, the mark of the abrasive. Seen up close, they look like field, hills, still water — the same place where the pieces are photographed.

Three principles

Manifesto
01

Manual process

Cut and shaped by hand, seam by seam, with no industrial mould.

02

Guided oxidation

The reaction of the metal is controlled to the exact tone and sealed with varnish.

03

Listen and understand

Every piece is born from a conversation and drawn for a specific space.

From sketch to bath

Every piece starts in pencil, among crossings-out and workshop arithmetic — the dimensions noted at the bench are the same ones that become sheet steel the next day.

Then come the cutting, the shaping, the oxidation and the varnish: four stages that define the final surface. No step is rushed to fit a factory deadline.
